Hui Wang Zhang born in Jiujiang, China, completed his formal 10 years of training in Chinese Dance forms, martial arts and Peking Opera at Beijing Dance Academy. He first appeared on the American stage in 2011 as part of the China Performing Arts Troupe promoting cultural exchange between China and the U.S. The company was invited to perform at Lincoln Center in New York and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in D.C.

With a full scholarship offer to pursue a Master of Fine Arts degree in Modern Dance at the University of Utah, Hui Wang moved to the United States in 2014. He studied Ballet with Sharee Lane and performed in contemporary works by his thought-provoking mentors like Eric Handman and Stephen Koester.

Hui Wang auditioned and got the job offer as a dancer from the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company. He moved to New York City in 2017. He has since appeared in all company new productions like Analogy/Trilogy, A letter to my nephew, Deep Blue Sea, What Problem?, Afterwardsness, Curriculum II, Curriculum III :People Places and Things as well as repertories like D-Man in the Waters, Story, Still/Here and Love Redefined. Hui Wang is praised for the integrity of his work and his mix of ferocity and calm on and offstage. Bill T. Jones called him “one of the most exceptional dancers that I have worked with.”

These early experiences profoundly shaped his thoughts on dance and dance-making, inspiring a process that encourages improvisation as a way to generate raw movement material and relies on context to reshape that material into finished works.

“Huiwang Zhang was astonishing slippery and resilient” called by the New York Times and “sensational” by the San Francisco Classical Voice, Zhang’s recent choreography and performance have included works for the San Francisco Opera (The Monkey King, 2025), Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company (Curriculum III : People, Places, and Things, Still/Here, 2025), The Metropolitan Opera (Aida, 2025 & Tristan and Isolde, 2026), Wendy Osserman Dance (Echo Glass, 2026)
